Morgs lines up a familiar helper

The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs are a week away from a pair of pre-season games against the Milton Keynes Lightning and ahead of those games we can now announce the final member of the squad for the 2019/20 season.

Tom Relf was released by the club over the summer and has signed to play for the Sutton Sting but has now been added to the Dogs squad on a two-way deal.

A product of the Bracknell system, Tom was playing regularly for the Bees in the EPL before moving to Sheffield to study at Sheffield Hallam University. ‘Relfy’ played three seasons at The Pound and was part of the team that won the Moralee Conference title.

Having graduated this summer, Tom is keen to stay in Sheffield and will be studying for a Masters whilst playing for the Sting – and the Steeldogs when needed!

Ben Morgan explains the departure and slight return of #11; “Tom was given an opportunity by Woody 3 years ago as a young aspiring player and with us looking to give similar chances to other young players this summer, he missed out on the team. He’s still a young player and he’s still learning so If he continues to enjoy his hockey and plays well for Sutton, the door is not closed on him coming back to the Dogs in the future.

“Relfy will be available all on a call-up basis when Sutton don’t have a game. We know there are some games where we will be short so he’s already penciled in for those games. He will be a useful extra player to call on when needed and I’m sure there will be times when we will need him.

“He’ll keep training with us during the season so he’ll be familiar with the way we play and the team in general. It’s no gamble, we know his style of play, he knows how we play, so it’s an easy option for us and gives him the chance to show where his game is at.”

Tom welcomes the chance to help out a club he’s grown to love; “I was disappointed not to get a spot with the Steeldogs but I completely understand where the club is going and I have a lot of love for the club so getting the chance to help out on a two way is great. I’ll be available to help out when Morgs wants me, whilst also letting me focus on working on my Masters and playing for Sutton

“The team looks really strong; I know a few of the new guys like Craig Elliott from being in Sheffield and Reece I know through the GB programme - I know just how good a player he is. Morgs has certainly brought in some real British talent and the imports look like they’ll be great additions too. I’ll be interested to see how the club does this year as a fan – and as a player!”

Welcome back Tom!

Thanks to Simon Butterworth and Sutton for their cooperation and to El Gordo and Jonny Vegas for returning as player sponsors to Tom. We thank them for their continuing support of the club.

Tom is the final piece of the 2019/20 squad joining Vladimir Luka, Jan Danecek, Nathan Salem, James Spurr, Craig Elliott, Ashley Calvert, Cam Brownley, Charlie Thompson, Brady Doxey, Alex Graham, Jack Brammer, Ben Morgan, Tom Barry, Jordan Griffin, Reece Cochrane, Tim Smith, Lewis Bell, Dmitri Zimozdra, Zack Brown and Curtis Warburton.

The team will be at The Nags Head tomorrow from 1-3 and then play the MK Lightning on Sunday week (the 8th 4:30 faceoff) before the Leeds Chiefs visit a week later (September 15th 4:30pm).
