Welcome back Craig!

A familiar face returns to the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs for season 2019/20. A player who was with the club back in our first ever season and who made the #13 jersey very popular with Dogs fans.

Craig Elliott joined the Steeldogs in 2010 and played for 6 seasons. He was a fan favourite whose high energy game meant he was always involved in the game. Having taken a year and a bit out of hockey, he joined the Senators for a few games before spending the whole of last season with Sutton Sting, scoring 47 points in 32 games.

Ben Morgan is happy to sign a player whose strengths he knows well;
“We are bringing Craig back to do what he does best. Not necessarily that old agitating player who gets under the skin of the opposition - although that’s in his style of play and I don’t think he will ever lose that! I see a different side to his game now, where if he gets the right line mates and regular ice time, he can be put into positions where he is able to contribute to the offence and will be able to put up some good numbers.

“His passion speaks for itself. He will be the hardest working guy on the ice, that’s for sure. We need that tenacity, that level of enthusiasm and commitment and I know that is exactly what Craig will bring. He’s got wiser as he has got older and will turn a few heads next season and surprise people who expect a certain style of hockey from him. He wants to compete and play in competitive games in good leagues.”

Craig spoke about his time away from the club;
“I had a few injuries when I left the Steeldogs back in 2016; I broke my foot and my collar bone so I needed time off from the game to recover and feel better. While I was away I started to play golf but it was different and didn’t really cut it. I still kept up to date with everything Steeldogs, following Twitter and Instagram, and I was able to see how well they were doing especially when they won the league which was pretty impressive. I began to miss hockey more then. I got the hunger back to play, to be involved and I had the itch to play again so I took the opportunity to skate for Sutton Sting last season.

“The Steeldogs is a different club to when I left. The owners have put a lot of effort into the club and this has brought about a professionalism to the club which is evident both on and off the ice. The Steeldogs have grown in stature, everything has gone up a notch from what I was used to before. And that’s why I am back here; I thoroughly enjoyed my hockey last year, loved the competition the Sting had against the top teams, playing against teams with more edge and I missed not having the chance to push myself to that sort of level.”

His role with the Steeldogs for season 19/20 is clear for Craig;
“I think my role will be working hard and keeping people honest if needs be. I really want to be chipping in with goals as I have found a scoring touch over the past season and I will be working on this with my new line mates. I am here to enjoy the hockey and contribute. When you come to the Steeldogs you are here for the team and you contribute in whatever way you can and I want to play my part in a successful team.

“I love what Morgs is about and what the whole club is about. I think one of the strengths of the whole Steeldogs organisation is togetherness and that is what you need to build your team success. When I am at iceSheffield it is clear that the fans love this club and care deeply about it and I look forward to being part of that.”
