A (Christmas) Miracle on Ice

If you were there, then you know what a shift every single player who dressed tonight put in for the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs. Swindon Wildcats, 2nd place in the National Division, could not match the play of the Steeldogs tonight at iceSheffield.

Still with players unavailable through injury and others playing through the pain barrier, the Steeldogs got the game off to a great start. 5 minutes in and Luka decided to take on the whole of the Wildcats, teasing his way with great control of the puck to the goal and finished with aplomb. Sheffield continued to attack the Wildcats and look for ways through to Marr but Swindon marshalled their defence to limit the Dogs chances. At the other end of the ice, the Steeldogs employed team defence to keep the Wildcats off the board. There was just no way through to Zimozdra. 1-0

Sheffield came out for the second with renewed energy and took it to the Wildcats. Alex Graham madethe next breakthrough just over the half way mark on the power-play after a great shot from Jordan Griffin. The Dogs continued to build momentum with Graham net for a second time whilst short handed to really rock Swindon. The Wildcats kept testing the Dmitri Zimozdra but couldn’t finish their chances. The team returned to the locker room with a three goal lead. 3-0

Swindon came into the third ready and determined to break the Dogs defence. Bullas scored for the visitors, what was eventually to be a consolation goal, but you never count out a team like the Wildcats. With great firepower in the Swindon forwards, the defence knew their role and executed it to Morgan’s instructions, despite being outshot by 17 to 5 in the period. The difference between the teams was taking chances in front of goal and tonight, the Steeldogs were the team who did exactly this. After endless waves of Swindon attacks, Craig Elliott made it 4-1 with a beautifully taken goal with a couple of minutes to go. The Dogs were rewarded for their sheer effort and resilience tonight. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Sheffield Steeldogs 4-1 Swindon Wildcats
