Dogs and Pirates share Christmas spoils

Here are the match reports from both games this weekend.

A Saturday night fixture at iceSheffield drew a large crowd of hockey fans to enjoy part one of the weekend as the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs took on the Hull Pirates.

Zimozdra and Smith were the starting goalies for the game.

There was a huge expectation of both teams to get off to a flier and it was the Pirates who drew first blood with a Chamberlain goal after 121 seconds. The play began to set out in a very strategic pattern. Both teams’ defences were primed and dealt with any offence created. A melee around Smith’s goal resulted in a penalty for the net minder and Griffin. Despite some positive forward play, the Steeldogs looked like they would go in for the break trailing but a quick shot from Danecek levelled the game during the powerplay and gave the Dogs a boost.

Sheffield came out for the second with the bit between their teeth and Reece Cochrane edged the Dogs in front on 22:58. The Dogs started to control the play from this point and showed some offensive prowess. Danecek was rewarded for his skilfull breakaway whilst short-handed with the his second and the Dogs third of the night on 31:32. The scoring for the game ended here but the entertaining play from Sheffield didn’t.

The third period didn’t produce any goals but there was plenty of work to be done to secure the points. Great defence and communication from the bench to the ice saw the Steeldogs keep Hull from adding to their tally. Sheffield had 5 penalties to kill in the final period and had to stay strong to protect Zimozdra.

End of the game Steeldogs 3-1 Pirates

Man of the match awards were presented to David Norris and James Spurr.

Sunday got off to a lively start with Chamberlain jumping James Spurr after 19 seconds. Steeldogs carried on their form from Saturday with Scott Morris burying a Brammer rebound in the eleventh minute. Despite Zimozdra being the busier net minder, it was the Dogs who got the next goal with a Luka rocket on the power play sending them to the break 2 in front. The middle session proved key as Hull made the most of their chances and made Sheffield pay for their mistakes. Norris scored early before Hewitt broke away to equalise just past halfway. Hull were in the ascendancy and when Zimozdra tried to clear the puck, Chamberlain took advantage to score. Hewitt added another in the final minute to give the Pirates a 4-0 period. The Dogs came out and battled to get back in the game; Alex Graham redirected a Luka power play effort to make it a one goal game with more than 15 minutes left. Both goals were under pressure for extended periods but neither net minder could be beaten. With Zimozdra pulled for an extra attacker, Chamberlain made it 5-3 with 17 seconds left.
