Game 2 of the weekend

Game 2 of the weekend and the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs took on their opponents from the previous night, MK Lightning.

Zimozdra and Lawday resumed their roles between the pipes. The Steeldogs despite being battered and bruised lined up for the face off ready to put in another solid 60 minutes.

Sheffield looked the sharper of the two teams in the opening minutes, Lawday called into action and a coat of paint denying Ripley a goal. A tenacious Tanaka was the first to score in the game as MK began to enjoy a little more possession and quality play in the offensive zone during a power play. Seconds later another blow was dealt as Cowley extended the lead for the visitors. Sheffield continued to create chances and gritty play from Wood, Spurr and Elliott was required. End of the period 0-2

Sheffield enjoyed their orange juice during the break and came out with renewed energy. Two goals followed each other quickly as persistence paid off with Graham getting the first goal and Spurr forcing the second home. Back in the game with more confidence, Sheffield committed more and more going forward. Five minutes after equalising, Sheffield found themselves behind on the scoreboard as Ferguson nudged the Lightning ahead. Just before the break the game kicked into more action as Stewart added to his goal tally while enjoying a power play. But Luka quickly responded short handed 15 seconds before the break with a superb goal. Down by one going into the break. 3-4

The final period was full of action and 100% effort from the Steeldogs, Ripley gave a great account of himself with his energy and effort, the young pups played tirelessly, the wise old heads dug in and fought for every puck and shift after shift was to be commended. As the buzzer went every ounce of energy had been spent and as they say, the Steeldogs definitely left it out there in the ice tonight.

Result: Steeldogs 3-4 Lightning

Man of the match awards were presented to Cale Tanaka and James Spurr, both deserving of that title.
