Charlie checks in for another campaign

Today the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs welcome back a guy who may not be a star name but who has been a big part of our squad over the past few years.

Charlie Thompson made his Steeldogs debut back in the 2014/15 season but his journey to 1st team regular wasn’t a smooth one. ‘Chaz’ did his time with the Senators and the Sting and battled his way back to the Dogs.

Over the past two seasons he has taken his chances and worked hard to be a valuable asset for Ben Morgan to call on. Whenever the opportunities have come, he has jumped on to the ice and given everything. Approaching his 23rd birthday, he can still grow his game further.

Coach Morgan sees plenty to like in what Charlie contributes to the cause;

“Chaz brings a lot to the team, he is probably the funniest guy on the team and in any team that is going to be successful you need someone who is going to be light hearted in the room, someone who is going to keep spirits high when things get a little tough and people get a little down.

“Away from that, over the past couple of seasons when we have asked people to step up he has been fantastic and played well in the big games. He is still young and I am hoping to see more of his development over the coming season, pushing for places and pushing for ice time. When I’ve asked Chaz to do a job, he has certainly stepped up to the plate.

“He is one of the most passionate guys on the team, he genuinely wants to improve and puts the team first. He isn’t one who sulks if he doesn’t get the ice time. He works hard on and off the ice. I am happy to have him back as part of the team.”

#81 is very happy to be back for another season;

“I never take it for granted that I will be asked to return each year, so it is massive when I know I am going to be a Steeldog for the coming season. I am there to try and earn my spot every season and warrant my ice time. I just hope I always do enough to impress the coach. One of the best parts of being a Steeldog has been wining silverware, the feeling you get then is massive. I am driven by success and winning trophies with friends in such a tight knit group is amazing.

“I enjoyed last season, I played regularly to begin with then took a back seat for a while but came back into it all at the end of the season in those big games. It doesn’t always go my way but I work hard and earn my chances. I keep sticking with it and enjoy it. Ending the year with the Unsung Hero award was very special - a huge surprise. It shows that Morgs appreciates what I am doing and it’s great to get the recognition.

“I am looking forward to the new season; it will be a challenge as the competition gets tougher but the Steeldogs love a challenge. I think we will be ready for it and many of us have been in the gym working out and getting in shape ready for the new season.”

Welcome back Chaz!

Chaz is back for another season and so are his sponsors. A big thank you to Donna & Dave who are returning as his player sponsors. The club thank them for their support of #81 and the team.

Charlie joins Nathan Salem, Cam Brownley, James Spurr, Lewis Bell, Ben Morgan and Dmitri Zimozdra in our 2019/20 squad.

We should have two big signings to announce next week, so keep checking back.
