View from the South - Basingstoke Bison

Dan Breen from Pro Hockey News is back to give us the low down on our next southern opposition, ahead of our game on Sunday (4:30) faceoff.

Basingstoke Bison

Head Coach: Ashley Tait

Home Rink: Planet Ice Basingstoke

Last Season: 4th – NIHL1 South

League form: 6th place - 2 wins and 2 losses

The Bison had a difficult season last year with the loss of their head coach, (now Bees head coach), Doug Shepperd. However, despite the relative disruption caused by the loss of the head coach and a number of players, new Coach Ashley Tait recruited well and got the Bison into 4th position last season.

The summer saw Tait lose the hugely experienced Russ Cowley to MK Lightning, but retain a good core of the squad. Like the Steeldogs, a sizable portion of the team are locally trained although some names should be familiar, such as former Hull Pirates D Tom Ralph and former Scimitar Alex Mettam.

Both of the Bison's imports are known quantities – Richard Bordowski and Michal Klejna who finished last season at just under 1.5 points per game, but it's gritty Brits such as Alex Sampford, George Norcliffe and Adam Harding that will cause the most trouble for the Dogs. As those of you that have seen the Steelers play will know, you cannot dismiss Ash Tait either, while he may not be as fast as he was, he's still one of the swifter skaters on the ice and has excellent positioning and a pin point shot.

What to expect: If Steeldogs get some early goals, time on the power play, they should propser. However, the Bison will move up the ice fast and will hit fast on the break and will be challenging opposition.

Leading scorer

Richard Bordowski – 3 goals and 3 assists from 4 games
