Steeldogs tame the Tigers

A Saturday off gave the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs a chance to refresh their legs ahead of a tricky trip to Telford.

Starting in goal were Zimozdra and Day. The Steeldogs didn’t waste any time in getting into the game and on 2:25 Doxey opened the scoring. Telford upped the play over the next few minutes and restricted the Dogs in their offence. Silverthorn punished a defensive error and equalised for the Tigers. Despite a wave of Telford pressure, Sheffield matched their opponents and the GB under 20s combined to create a Graham goal. The Steeldogs dug in well to defend when the Tigers threatened and didn’t panic when the puck grazed the goal line. 1-2

The Tigers came out of the traps quickly in second but their forwards were continuously coming up short against a well organised defence. The Steeldogs worked hard to create openings and each line combined well to give Day plenty to think about. Chances fell for Ripley, Salem, Spurr and Graham. The Dogs had quite a while with their penalty killing units out on the ice and Silverthorn benefitted again with a power play goal. All square at the forty minute mark. 2-2

The third period started with Telford on the front foot, Whistle and Florian having their shot but no dice. Danecek tested Day, Howells hit the bar. The Steeldogs spent quite some time in the Tigers zone during the third and were rewarded with their persistence as Salem dispatched a quality shot past Day on the 56 minute mark. The action heated up with two minutes to go. Florian and Graham received roughing calls and the Dogs were killing a penalty at a crucial time. Day skated to the bench for the extra attacker but Telford lost possession and Morgan fired the puck the length of the rink into the empty net to top a great road win.

Jordan Griffin (sponsored by Wisewood Juniors FC) was awarded the Steeldogs man of the match.
