🛎 🛎 Round 2 Steeldogs v Lightning

After a close battle the night before and a belief of ‘we can do this’, the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs began another close encounter with MK Lightning.

Skinns got the nod to start in goal for the visitors, Zimozdra remained the man protecting the net for the Steeldogs.

Sheffield began the game with energy and a fire in their bellies. Several charges into the Lightning zone saw Skinns make early saves. Indeed the Steeldogs deserved the lead with the offence they created. Ryan Johnson saw that happen with a long range effort that dropped behind Skinns. The Steeldogs continued to pile on the pressure and Jan Danecek was next to score a nicely worked goal. This seemed to make MK step up a gear and Tanaka scored a delightful goal. Followed three minutes later by Carlon’s equaliser, which needed confirmation after an officials tete a tete. End of the first 2-2

The second period didn’t provide any goals but there was plenty of work for Zimozdra to do as MK stepped up their play in the Dogs zone recording 21 shots on the Sheffield goal. A solid period by the 4 man D in support of Zimozdra made sure that the score remained 2-2.

Kana got the third period off to a flyer with a goal for MK inside the first minute but the Dogs weren’t going to roll over and let the visitors tickle their bellies; the Brammer Bull was let loose and he scored the equaliser in 42:43. The game grew tighter and chances became more and more important. With the Steeldogs a man down Kana took advantage and nudged the Lightning in front again at 51:23. From here Sheffield were going to have to put in a shift and a half to get back in - and that is what they did. From somewhere the team found an extra spring in their step and with almost three minutes remaining Vlad Luka found the twine. All level at the end of regulation, 4-4

3 on 3 OT saw plenty of excitement but no goal - the game was to be settled by the good old penalty shoot out:
Spurr 🥅
Kana 🥅
Luka 🥅

Final score: Steeldogs 5-4 MK Lightning
Another fabulous win with seven players missing from the Dogs lineup and great efforts from the teenagers through to the more ‘experienced’ guys in the squad.

Man of the match awards were presented to Tanaka and Zimozdra.

The Steeldogs are back at iceSheffield next Saturday, and with our GB silver medalists back in the line up.
