Dogs sign up Susters

The Sheffield Steeldogs have a tradition of maintaining a large core of players who remain with the team from one season to the next. However, signing number 3 for season 20/21 is a new face to the club – but a familiar one in the NIHL National Division.

Latvian born forward Martins Susters joins the Dogs from the Peterborough Phantoms. He’s only 21 years old but has been a force in the 2nd tier for a few years, scoring 38 points in 43 games at age 18 in the EPL. Last season he was 10th highest in points across the entire league and top scoring under 21. He was a player in great demand but has chosen to come to the Steeldogs.

He played his junior hockey in the UK in Nottingham and mostly Peterborough - but next season will not be his first year in Sheffield. Back in 2013, he played for the Rapiers and the Steelhawks, alongside Liam Kirk, Charlie Thompson, Cam Brownley, Tom Barry and Cole Shudra – and he finished top scorer!

At 6 foot 2, Martins brings some size to the Dogs line-up but it’s eye for goal that will have brought him to most fans’ attention; he scored 36 goals last season (joint 5th in the league with Vlad Luka amongst others). He scored 9 goals and 2 assists in the 4 games against the Steeldogs last season, so having him playing for us is a real positive.

Ben Morgan explained how Martins became a Steeldog;

“Martins is someone who has always been on our radar as a club, certainly mine as a coach. I’d only spoken to him in between shifts on the ice but he came across as a really nice guy. I’ve been speaking to a few of his ex-team mates and all of the feedback is that he’s extremely motivated, driven and someone who sees himself playing at a much higher level in years to come.

“The biggest reason he decided to make a move and join us was because of our development pathway that we have been able to build over the past couple of years, with numerous players moving on to Elite League and beyond. He feels it is the best fit for him, his development as a young aspiring player and we feel we can cater for his needs.

“His points production stands him in good stead in terms of what he has been able to achieve over the past few seasons. He is someone who when we play against him, has been the guy that has stuck the knife in at the worst points of all times. He often got the winning goal or a goal which brought them back into the game. He is always in the thick of it and that is the type of player that we want.

We need a little bit more scoring, especially primary scoring - he is another player who will bring us that this season. He is well over six foot and that really helps but he also brings vision and an ability to mix it up, he has different styles of play. He is not just an end to end type of player; he will get in the corners, he connects well in link up play – he has talent in an abundance. He can be versatile on different lines, one who will naturally be looking to put up good numbers on special teams. We are delighted to secure his services”.

Steeldogs co-owner Ali Cree is excited to see Martins pulling on a Dogs jersey;

“Martins has been one of the stand-out young players over the past couple of years, so to be able to bring him to Sheffield is a real coup. We had lots of young talent in the team last season and even though at 21 he’s older than several of them, Martins is still a guy with real scope to keep on improving, to really establish himself.

“Giving younger players that chance to thrive and develop is central to our club and Martins is keen to see where our development pathway can take him. He’s a cracking talent and has always been a thorn in our side, so I am really looking forward to him in our colours”.
